It runs from the command line, but will require a reboot in order to complet the routine. To run chkdsk you need to do the following: Start >>Run >>cmd.exe >>Press [Enter] OR Start >>All Programs >>Accessories >>Command Prompt When the command prompt window opens, type the following: chkdsk /f/r And then press [Enter] It will give some coding syntax returned and ask if you want to run chkdsk at next boot. Type 'yes' or 'y' whichever answer will indicate that 'yes you want to run chkdsk at next boot'. You can get more information about the chkdsk command by typing the following: chkdsk /?
Press [Enter] If you cannot boot Windows and get to your desktop environment to run go through the Start ->All Programs menu, boot your computer to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. You may need to log in as the local administrator account on your machine to access the C: drive from the command prompt.
